University of Georgia introduces Natural Infrastructure Certificate for training interdisciplinary grad students

This coming fall, the University of Georgia Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems will introduce the Natural Infrastructure Graduate Certificate, a set of coursework designed for students from all disciplines to learn the skills and expertise necessary to address complex infrastructure challenges using nature-based solutions (NbS) and Engineering With Nature® (EWN) principles.

“We’re very excited to announce the launch of our new Natural Infrastructure Graduate Certificate,” their press release read, “which will help train the workforce the world needs to tackle tomorrow’s complex climate and infrastructure problems.”

The certificate program consists of required “core” courses that are handpicked to ensure students have a strong foundation in the principles of natural infrastructure design and the collaborative skills to work with an array of partners. These include Fundamentals of Natural Infrastructure and Nature-Based Solutions, Field Experiences in Natural Infrastructure and Skills for Collaborative Research. Students must also complete two electives, which come from departments across campus: ecology, engineering, landscape architecture, forestry, social sciences and more.

The certificate also includes the Internship in Natural and Hybrid Infrastructure course, where students will form multi-disciplinary project teams that conduct the planning, design, implementation, operations and maintenance of a natural infrastructure project.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expressed strong support for the NI Certificate, emphasizing their workforce development needs in nature-based solutions and resilient infrastructure.
