Team members from Austin, Texas’ Watershed Protection Department were delighted to attend the Society of Freshwater Science conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico in May 2025. Here’s a quick recap:
Angel Santiago presented our latest results on modeling sediment and water quality in Austin. The modeling mimics conditions under storm and base flow and was calibrated to
USGS data. The preliminary model helps inform future water quality sampling and aims to guide decision makers on watershed health across the city.
Christina Bryant showcased our latest technique to estimate the performance of storm water control measures using a “wisdom of the crowd” approach. This method leverages diverse participant input to cancel out biases and improve estimation accuracy.
Mateo Scoggins (retired) presented case studies in Spanish on Decision Support Systems developed for Austin, TX; Melbourne, Australia; and Los Angeles, CA.
A big shoutout to Abel Porras, Andrew Chu, Karen Villatora, and all our team members for their contributions and participation!
