AECOM’s Nature-Based Solutions: Empowering People and Nature to Thrive

Nature-based solutions harness the power of ecosystems to drive resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable outcomes. With over half of the world’s GDP dependent on healthy natural systems—and an estimated $700 billion per year needed to halt species and ecosystem loss—these solutions integrate ecological processes into the way we plan, design, and build.

Nature-based approaches address climate vulnerabilities by leveraging or enhancing natural assets to deliver community benefits such as flood control, carbon capture, and habitat restoration. They can take many forms, including wildlife crossings, habitat recovery programs, regenerative remediation, urban green infrastructure, and wetland restoration.

Nature advisory services help organizations embed nature-related actions into their core business strategies, set measurable targets, and align with global frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN).

A recent milestone in this field is the Playbook for Nature-Positive Infrastructure Development, developed in collaboration with global partners. It offers practical guidance for embedding nature as a central consideration from the earliest stages of infrastructure projects—rather than as a retrofit—drawing on insights from nearly 200 projects worldwide.

By placing nature at the heart of decision-making, nature-based solutions go beyond traditional “green” enhancements. They create infrastructure that works in harmony with ecosystems, supports biodiversity, improves resilience to climate impacts, and generates long-term social value for communities. This approach shows how environmental stewardship and human development can thrive together, creating a future where both people and nature prosper.
