Partner Takeover: USACE Engineering With Nature

Our next Partner Takeover is our second founding partner, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineering With Nature® initiative!

EWN is proud to be a founding partner of the Network for Engineering With Nature (N-EWN), launched in 2019 to accelerate the implementation of natural infrastructure through collaborative science, tools, and training.

Founded by USACE in 2010, EWN applies science and engineering to deliver infrastructure solutions that are effective, resilient, and operationally efficient. By integrating natural and engineering processes, EWN maximizes the benefits of infrastructure—supporting navigation, coastal storm protection, flood risk management, and ecosystem restoration.

As the federal lead in N-EWN, USACE helped launch the network to formalize and expand practices that were already underway but not yet systematic. The vision: infrastructure that does more than perform a single function—solutions that generate economic, ecological, and community value, while meeting mission objectives.

EWN’s core principles include:

  • Applying science and engineering to produce operational efficiency
  • Leveraging natural processes to extend project lifespan and minimize resource demands
  • Expanding benefits through integrated planning
  • Using collaboration to streamline projects and align infrastructure with broader goals

Through N-EWN, USACE brings together research and practice—fulfilling civil works missions at a systems-scale and delivering long-term value for communities and ecosystems.

Stay tuned this week as we feature the work of the EWN team—and follow along to meet the rest of our incredible partners building the future of infrastructure.
