It’s Day 4 of Anchor QEA’s media week! Today we feature our work advancing the beneficial use of dredged material (BUDM) in Virginia.
We recently developed a GIS tool for the Commonwealth of Virginia that aligns beneficial use and restoration opportunities with planned dredging projects, providing stakeholders and decision-makers with the data they need for smarter site selection and sustainable outcomes.
Earlier this year, Anchor QEA completed the technical report, entitled “Beneficial Use Options and Considerations for Dredged Material in Coastal Virginia” for the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC). This comprehensive document serves as a key resource documenting the current state of BUDM in the region and highlights project development considerations, as well as potential strategies for future progress toward BUDM.
This effort was a true collaboration with contributions from the Virginia Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Program (Virginia Department of Environmental Quality), VMRC, the Elizabeth River Project, Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), and the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission, alongside a broad network of stakeholders.
These tools and resources aim to support more sustainable, strategic dredging practices across coastal Virginia.
