This month’s N-EWN Knowledge Series will take place Thursday, April 18th at 12:30pm ET. The webinar is titled CarbonWATCH: Assessing Your Carbon Inventory at the Landscape Level Using Geospatial Technology and features three experts from Stantec: Grant Wiseman, Brendan Player and Martha Farella.
Description: As climate change becomes an increasing threat, and organizations across the globe are setting ambitious net zero and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, assessing, inventorying, and monitoring carbon stock in plants and soils has become vitally important to a variety of businesses and sectors. Stantec’s CarbonWATCH tool measures the amount of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) present in vegetation and soil and can be deployed in any ecosystem for a wide variety of industries and professionals. Using a combination of high-resolution imagery, LiDAR, vegetation species allometric models, and artificial intelligence/machine learning, we can quantify CO2e in reclamation sites and\or mature natural capital locations faster and more accurately than traditional methods. During this webinar, participants will learn about the carbon markets, needs, the measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) process verses traditional monitoring methods, and how CarbonWATCH is utilized to streamline carbon measurements in vegetation and soil.
Presenters:
Grant Wiseman, Remote Sensing Technology Manager, grant.wiseman@stantec.com
Grant is a subject matter expert for remote sensing, satellite imagery, aerial photos, or drone data. He has completed studies across the globe: mapping mountain gorilla habitats in the rainforests of central Borneo and delineating native American archaeology in the Canadian high arctic. He’s also utilized many types of new remotely sensed imagery such as ultraviolet light, thermal energy, and synthetic aperture RADAR.
Brendan Player, Nature-based Carbon Solutions Team Lead, brendan.player@stantec.com
Brendan helped develop Stantec’s capabilities around landscape greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and carbon crediting for their Nature-based Carbon Solutions team. He’s a carbon sequestration subject matter expert and collaborates on projects spanning forests, wetlands, grasslands, and croplands. His work extends to climate impact assessments, GHG reporting, and offsetting through the global voluntary carbon market.
Brendan helped develop the Carbon Offset Tool, which standardizes the credit calculation process, and CarbonWATCH, which we will hear about today.
Martha Farella, Data Scientist, martha.farella@stantec.com
Martha joined Stantec’s digital solutions team in 2022 with over ten years of GIS experience. During her time in graduate school, Martha developed a passion for soil health and sustainable practices. Martha has used satellite imagery to monitor cover crops—using imaging spectroscopy to create high resolution predictions of soil functionality across complex landscapes, evaluations of plant traits across diverse biomes, and identification of flooded areas after natural disasters.
Martha has experience working with many different types of remote sensing data including thermal, lidar, and hyperspectral imagery. She enjoys applying her GIS skills to big data analytics and machine learning, as well as science outreach and education activities.
