November 2025 Knowledge Series: Beyond the Dredge: Boosting Remediation Impact with Nature-based Solutions – The Money Case
Josef Rieger, Anchor QEA Located on the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in Chesapeake, Virginia, Money Point was once among the most contaminated sites on the Chesapeake Bay. Decades of industrial activity, including wood treatment operations, left the riverbed coated with toxic creosote. By 2006, the river bottom was biologically dead, and the few…

October 2025 Knowledge Series: Harnessing Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) as a Natural Infrastructure Tool for Water Quality & Biodiversity
Nicholas Muzia, Sea & Shoreline Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), including freshwater macrophytes and saltwater seagrasses, is a valuable natural infrastructure tool for improving water quality and biodiversity. This presentation examines how SAV can be integrated into hybrid green/gray infrastructure and restoration projects to stabilize sediment, reduce wave energy, and enhance water clarity, fostering resilient habitats…

August 2025 Knowledge Series: Life Depends on Rivers: Building a Movement to Protect and Restore America’s Rivers
Jenny Hoffner and Eileen Shader, CFM, American Rivers Rivers are essential to all life on earth, but our rivers are at risk as never before from climate change, pollution, drought, flooding, and loss of natural habitat. American Rivers is championing a national effort to protect and restore all rivers, from remote mountain streams to urban…

July 2025 Knowledge Series: The Lower Klamath Project – The World’s Largest Dam Removal and River Restoration Project
Dave Coffman, Resource Environmental Solutions LLC Removal of four hydropower dams (Iron Gate, Copco 1, Copco 2, and J.C. Boyle) on the Klamath River in northern California and southern Oregon represents the largest dam removal and river restoration project in the country. The project restores free-flowing conditions and volitional fish passage to more than 400…

April 2025 Knowledge Series: Making the Case for Nature-Based Solutions: Ecosystem Services, Benefit-Cost Analyses, and Storytelling
Glen Delaney & Carson Risner, Earth Economics We all rely on services provided by nature, often in ways we don’t fully recognize. Earth Economics identifies and quantifies those benefits to ensure they are included in the decision-making process at all levels, so communities can mitigate risk, increase resilience, and protect their natural capital wealth. Awareness…

March 2025 Knowledge Series: Leveraging Partnerships for Living Shoreline Implementation at Scale
Mary-Margaret S. McKinney, RF, Director of Coastal Restoration, Native Shorelines, a Davey Company Healthy, well-vegetated coastlines are resilient coastlines, able to withstand daily pressures and quickly recover from storm events. Unfortunately, many of our coastlines are not healthy and seem to require ever greater measures for stabilization. Traditional stabilization methods reduce or eliminate many of…

January 2025 Knowledge Series: Ecology and Engineering of Native Plant-Soil Interactions and Riparian Structures
Hailey N. Blackwell & Nethmi Silva, PhD Candidates, University of Oklahoma Current engineering practices and regulations regarding vegetation on levees have resulted in the predominant use of non-native, annual or perennial turf grasses. These plants typically have thin, fibrous, and shallow root structures which are maintained as turf via regular maintenance mowing which is labor…
