Our Work

Austin, with its unique network of creeks, rivers, and green spaces, provides the perfect backdrop for our environmental endeavors. We aim to ensure the safety and well-being of the community while preserving natural resources. Committed to innovative strategies to enhance the stewardship of Austin’s watersheds, we balance urban development with environmental conservation, nurturing sustainable and resilient communities.

With jurisdiction spanning approximately 45 watersheds across 250 square miles, we have a rich history of comprehensive monitoring and research. Our expertise in water quality, flooding and erosion risk assessments is supported by advanced modeling, statistics, and machine learning expertise. Our GIS database is a treasure trove, featuring a high-resolution inventory of over ten thousand stormwater control structures designed for flood and water quality management, complete with detailed information on associated drainage areas, impervious cover, and land use. Additionally, we provide educational materials and training programs, along with online tools like FloodPro for real-time flood information and the Environmental Integrity Index for learning about the condition of watershed health.

As we renew our strategic plan, a process and future plan called Rain to River, our focus is on building meaningful equitable relationships with community members to better understand community priorities and build better human and environmental outcomes. We have an opportunity to enhance watershed resilience through the integration of nature-based solutions across all projects, programs, practices and policies as we rethink the work of our department. Currently, our department promotes natural infrastructure development through initiatives such as green stormwater infrastructure, riparian restoration, urban forest enhancement, wetland preservation and creation, land conservation, and community engagement programs like Grow Green and Grow Zone. These initiatives contribute to a more sustainable, resilient and livable Austin, aligning with our mission to protect and enhance the city’s natural and built environments.

Grow Green is a gardening education program that promotes sustainable landscaping practices.
